Congratulations to the Kansas City Mini Maker Faire team for hosting an excellent Faire! Along with countless happy visitors, I had a great time learning about all of the awesome projects that were being presented, such as a remote-control Nerf gun, soda can crusher, and miniature drum set. The MakerBots were out in force, and the rockets and foam planes were a'flying. You can see the rest of my photos here, and watch a news segment about the event here. I'm ready for next year already!
Did you make it out to the Faire? Be sure to share your photos and memories in the comments! Here are some of my favorites:

A foam cutting machine, that uses a reciprocating needle to punch out patterns quickly with no mess

Kids making security screwdrivers from nails, which can be used to take apart plastic toys

Learning to solder with Mitch Altman and Jimmie Rodgers

And, a wooden submarine!

Maker Faire heroes i3Detroit are hosting a Maker Mixer at their space next month, to give everyone who was too wrapped up in running their events a chance to relax and socialize. This should be a great way to catch up with everyone in the area and get involved in the DIY scene in Detroit:
Detroit's first Maker Faire was a smashing success by all accounts, bringing together hundreds of exhibiting makers, scores of awesome creations, and tens of thousands of onlookers and makers-to-be. It was educational, entertaining, and most of all, busy.So busy, in fact, that many makers spent the whole weekend in their booths, with little opportunity to meet each other. And while the spectacle was great for short-term attention, the synergy is where long-term gains stand to be made. To that end, i3Detroit will host an event we're calling the Maker Mixer. On September 4th, anyone who's interested in DIY (and especially anyone who exhibited at Maker Faire) is encouraged to come down to Ferndale and spend the afternoon at i3Detroit's shop.

Good news for London makers/hackers- the London Hackspace just relocated to a newer, bigger venue, and is having a spacewarming party to celebrate the move! Here's the details:
The London Hackspace is a non-profit, community-run hacker space in central London. We provide a space where people who make things can come to share tools and knowledge. We've just signed the lease on our new workshop - "Laboratory 24" - in Shoreditch. This larger venue will enable us to provide many more facilities than were possible in our previous space. To celebrate our move we're having a party/open evening on the 1st of August. This is a great chance for interested non-members to have a look at the space, but also for everybody to get to know like-minded hackers with similar or completely different interests, discuss projects and techniques, and generally just hang out and have a beer.

MAKE Volume 23, Gadgets
This special issue is devoted to machines that do delightful and surprising things. In it, we show you how to make a miniature electronic Whac-a-Mole arcade game, a tiny but mighty see-through audio amp, a magic mirror that contains an animated soothsayer, a self-balancing one-wheeled Gyrocar, and the Most Useless Machine (as seen on The Colbert Report!). Plus we go behind the scenes and show you how Intellectual Ventures made their incredible laser targeting mosquito zapper -- yes, it's real, and you wish you had one for your patio barbecue. The Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago is looking for "you." And by "you," we mean an adventurous, outgoing person with a strong interest in learning about science and the world around her or him, plus the ability to write engagingly about your experiences. Ideally, you're also the web-savvy sort who can keep your thumb out of frame when taking photographs. If that "you" sounds like you, or if you are simply curious about this intriguing endeavor, then you should read on.

Matt Cottam of Tellart wrote in with news of the pop-up Fab Lab at the DMY International Design Festival in June 2010:
A roadtrip caravan transporting a Fab lab from Amsterdam to Berlin, a panel discussion, a workshop, a talk, and lots of making...
Early Wednesday morning Matt [Cottam] met up with Bas van Abel (Waag Society), Mike Pelletier (Waag Society Fab Lab) and Gianfranco Checci (PICNIC) for the six hour drive from Amsterdam to Berlin. The night before, other Waag Society teammates drove a truck filled with the entire Waag Fab Lab to the now defunct Templehof Airport in Berlin.. By early Thursday morning the Maker Lab area of the festival was a hive of activity. The annual DMY Festival exhibits the work of more than 400 designers and is extended by over 40 satellite events around Berlin. This year the event hosted an international group of designer-hackers who brought in a factory's worth of machinery to set up a Maker Lab. CNC milling, laser cutting, thermal forming, bioplastic molding, physical computing with Arduino, custom circuit board design and etching with Fritzing, RepRap and MakerBot 3-d printing, stop-motion animation and just about every other means of prototyping was in house...

I just got back from the Science Museum of Minnesota where the second Make: Day has concluded. Make: Day is kind of a mini maker faire, with all sorts of fun projects displayed for museum-goers. Last year's event was partly a promotion for Make: Television but this one didn't really have a clear Maker Media connection. Nevertheless, I showed up with some copies of MAKE Magazine, a few Make books, a bunch of buttons to give out and some BrushBots to show off. I really enjoyed interacting with the visitors, nearly all of whom brought their kids along. Everyone loved the BrushBots and the books and magazines provoked a ton of questions and comments. I'm super tired but had a great time!
Did you attend Make: Day? Drop a comment and let us know your favorite part.
(Sorry about the iffy pic, I didn't have time to shoot many photos!)

Congratulations to the Ann Arbor Mini Maker Faire folks for putting on an awesome Faire! The event has grown quite a bit since last years event. There were lots of awesome things on display, such as a solar-powered tractor, DIY skee ball machine, a magnetoscope, homemade saw mill, improvised musical instruments, and robots galore, not to mention learn-to-solder and learn-to-sew demonstrations. Here are some photos that I took of the festivities.
Did you attend? Be sure to share your photos and memories in the comments!
Also, remember that Maker Faire Detroit is just around the corner, and there's still time to register to exhibit! If you've been working on cool gadgets, projects, or crafts, this is a great place to show them off and inspire others!

Interested in learning what some of the greatest minds in the Maker scene have in store for the future? This Saturday, catch our own Mark Frauenfelder at the Commonwealth Club in San Francisco, where he will talk with Adam Savage from MythBusters about where he sees the DIY movement heading. Sounds like a fun event:
Make It: How to DIY
Mark Frauenfelder, Editor, Make Magazine
In conversation with Adam Savage, Host, "MythBusters"You know that guy or girl who can make or fix anything? Yes, the same MacGyver wannabe who repairs a flat tire with an empty water bottle and a pen. You can now compete with these handy heroes. Especially now, in times of financial hardship, people want to fix and create useful and awesome gadgets from scratch. MAKE magazine leads this "yes I can" attitude with tips for new self-sufficiency. From fixing your cracked iPhone screen to make-shifting an aerial camera rig from Popsicle sticks, a drugstore kite and Play-Doh, Make has it all. Find out where technophile and editor-in-chief Frauenfelder plans to lead this DIY movement.
As if Mr. Make and Mr. Mythbuster aren't interesting enough, we are securing a solid lineup of DIY creations to follow their 'bot' banter. Behold yourselves, INFORUMers, for the glove that plays Rock-Paper-Scissors, animated Luminas as morphing light sprites, and the sky -- like you've never seen it before.

Reminder: The Ann Arbor Mini Maker faire is only a few weeks away, so if you are planning to exhibit you should sign up soon! The Faire will be held at the Washtenaw Farm Council Fairgrounds on Saturday, June 5th, 2010. See you there!
Note that this event is different then Maker Faire Detroit, which will be happening at the end of July.
Organizers of the Ann Arbor "Mini" Maker Faire have issued a Call for Makers for the June 5, 2010 event to be held at the Washtenaw Farm Council Grounds (aka "Saline Fairgrounds"). The Faire features exhibits and activities in robots, green tech, science, radio, rocketry, unusual tools/techniques, fixing and/or taking things apart, and other areas, all with an emphasis on "do it yourself." Last year's Faire drew over 1,200 people to engage in activities such as learning to solder and silk screening t-shirts, and saw exhibits some of which were featured in Make Magazine. Organizers are tripling the space and hope to have at least twice as many exhibits for 2010.The Faire is free to exhibitors and visitors alike, and is funded by sponsors and the organizers. It is a local version of the major Maker Faires in the Bay area, and, new this year, at the Henry Ford Museum in Detroit and in New York City.
Exhibitors can find additional information and an online application form at http://www.a2makerfaire.com. Application deadline is May 5, 2010.
The mission of the Ann Arbor Mini Maker Faire is to present interesting or unique exhibits, individuals, and demonstrations in DIY science, technology, engineering, and art that excite, motivate, and educate. The emphasis should be on cool things, skills, and knowledge. As a shorthand, the exhibits should be the kind of thing you'd see in Make Magazine.

http://blog.makezine.com/archive/2010/05/score_pop_up_swap_in_brooklyn.html

Here's a great event in Brooklyn, NY for getting rid of unwanted stuff while scoring some sweet new duds/gear/anything:
In case you missed that last two swaps (that drew over 1,000 each!), this is how Score! works: Attendees bring their old clothes, music, books, etc, to the event and drop them at the door. Volunteers sort and distribute these items to themed departments where professional curators organize them into boutique-like displays. Attendees have the option to browse each department and take as much as they can carry! Meanwhile, DJs keep the party poppin’, artists silkscreen custom tote bags, and fashion photographers take photos of stylish “scored” outfits. At the end of the day, all leftover items and proceeds from the event are donated to charity.
Departments include clothing (male & female), books & media, electronics, music, housewares, bikes, crafts and "kiddie corner." North Brooklyn hackerspace Alpha One Labs will be curating the electronics section. Here's a video from last year's swap:

Interested in learning about the latest developments in brain-computer interfacing? Then you might want to check out The Business of the Brain, a presentation being held tomorrow at the MIT/Stanford Venture Lab in California:
Brain-Computer Interfacing (BCI) promises a quantum leap in human interaction with technology--enabling our thoughts and emotions to control devices and enabling devices to know what we're "really thinking" and feeling. Currently, there are more than 300 million brain toting people in the United States alone, making the opportunities for BCI products far-reaching.BCI is bringing fresh and often unexpected perspectives to established industries, from entertainment and transportation to medicine and information systems. In this emergent phase of consumer-related BCI, innovators are redefining sleep management, gaming, user interfacing, courtroom evidence, and national security--and this is only the beginning.
For the first time, neuroscientists and savvy entrepreneurs, from a number of traditionally unrelated industries, are teaming up to move BCI technology out of research and medical labs and into our everyday lives. The Business of the Brain event will address the challenges and opportunities of this exciting revolution, including limitations of "wet" sensors, "noise" interference, government regulation, novel user interfaces, designing industry-specific BCI applications and the cost engineering of current applications.

Our favorite eyes and ears in the international hobby market, Fra Fondi, is at the Shizuoka Hobby Show 2010 in Tokyo. On Hobby Media, he's posted a bunch of coverage already. The text is in Italian, but the tour-of-the-floor videos speak for themselves.
Frankie will be liveblogging tonight at 6pm PDT (9pm EDT) from the show floor. Check the Hobby Media site for details (and bring your Italian to English dictionary).

The ITP Spring Show 2010 (a two day exhibition of interactive projects, sound and physical computing at NYU's Interactive Telecommunications Program Tisch School of the Arts) was a blast! Here are some of our favorite projects from this year (more photos here):
Estrella Intersects the Plane - Matthew Richard
Using 40 servos and 80 RGB LEDs, an attempt to create a animated color field painting by letting the light itself mix together on a canvas. The 2 LEDs are placed at the tips of 40 arms that are arranged in a circle and controlled by 40 servos. One LED faces towards the center of the circle and the other faces away from the center. Subtle differences in servo timing and LED values create a look similar to sea anemones. The color patterns resemble wasting sunsets and sunrises melding and disappearing.
Balloon Projections: Paul Rothman, Rune Madsen
We are projecting visuals on a cluster of balloons. There are a few different visuals: Singing heads that open their mouth every time a MIDI note is triggered Letters forming sentences across the balloons Stars reacting to incoming MIDI messages
The Life Dress is inspired by The Game of Life, an algorithm by John Conway that models cell life through a simple set of rules applied to squares on a grid. Whether a cell is born, survives, or dies is determined by the condition of surrounding cells. It is through the shared existence of cells, or, indeed, people, that any survive and illuminated patterns occur.
IntelliGram: Jason Aston, Tamar Ziv
The IntelliGram is a cryptic interactive apparatus which unexpectedly erupts into action.
My full set of photos is available here.

http://blog.makezine.com/archive/2010/05/make_day_call_for_makers.html

Last year's Make: Day at the Science Museum of Minnesota was an exciting event full of geeky folks around the Twin Cities, showing off their projects. My colleague and ultimate ninja Mr. John Park was in attendance, promoting Make: television. Well, this year John won't be there (I think?!) but there will be a whole bunch of interesting people and projects.
Celebrate the ingenuity and inventiveness in our community. The Science Museum of Minnesota joins forces with TPT and KARE 11 to once again bring you Make: Day, giving local engineers, artists, tinkerers and inventors the opportunity to showcase their DIY creations and innovations to museum visitors. This family-friendly event features arts, electronics, musical performances, green technology, crafting and more!
And they need more makers! If you'd like to share what you're working on, click on the link below and submit your project.

Don't miss NYU's ITP spring show 2010:
ITP's graduating students will be presenting a wide variety of highly creative and interactive projects that they have constructed over the course of their final project seminars.
ITP is a two-year graduate program located in the Tisch School of the Arts whose mission is to explore the imaginative use of communications technologies — how they might augment, improve, and bring delight and art into people's lives. Perhaps the best way to describe us is as a Center for the Recently Possible.

Make: Online reader Richard Kline (Dayton, OH) wrote in to remind us of this excellent ham radio convention:
I thought I would send a heads-up in case nobody else had about Hamvention 2010, a huge electronics and ham radio convention in Dayton Ohio, which takes place in about two weeks (May 14, 15, and 16th).
Hamvention usually has attendance of about 20,000 people and is loads of fun for anyone who is interested in electronics or ham radio... there is an outdoor electronics flea market with thousands of vendors selling all variety of electronic tools and components and a myriad more ham-radio vendors indoors showing off their latest and greatest stuff. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door and are good for all three days. Outdoor flea market vendor spaces costs between $70 and $100 depending on location.
More info here.
Are any of our readers attending? Our very own Diana Eng will be there!

http://blog.makezine.com/archive/2010/04/help_mitch_cleveland_ohio_makers_un.html
Mitch Altman travels around the world doing electronics workshops that teaches everyone from all walks of life about making things. I've seen Mitch work for 48 hours straight showing hundreds of kids how to build electronics, it's amazing.
In this video we talk about a great event he was at, but there was one person who took off with over $600+ worth of electronics Mitch uses for these workshops, he doesn't make money on these workshops at all - so we made a quick video and we're hoping the person who took them just sends them back, we'll even pay for the shipping - no questions asked.
Notacon was way wonderful this year. The Hardware Hacking Area was way bigger than last year (as is the case *everywhere*!), and it was totally hopping! More than a third of people at the con made something!Me and Jimmie joined in on the Hardware Hacking Area set up by the new Makers Alliance hackerspace in Cleveland. We love giving these workshops at hacker conferences and hackerspaces around the world! It is just so incredibly gratifying to see so many people happily making cool things together! That's why we do this! We actually don't make any money from doing it -- but we do break even, which means that we make enough from each workshop to allow us to pay for the overhead of the next one. And it works out really well! We love teaching people how to make cool things!
The only bummer about Notacon this year (besides for my train being canceled, necessitating me taking a Greyhound to NYC!) is that someone(s) stole a bunch of my kits and Jimmie Rodger's kits. $585 worth of my kits were taken, including a pile of FTDI cables, a pile of MiniPOV3 kits, plus a bunch of other kits. Jimmie had 2 Arduino boards taken plus a few of his kits, which comes to about $250 of his stuff taken. Last year was my first Notacon, and though I loved it more than enough to come back this year, $690 of my kits were stolen there (again mostly FTDI cables and MiniPOV3 kits).
Out of all of the workshops I've given over the last few years, I've never had kits stolen from any of them -- Notacon is the only place. That is so odd, because Notacon is such a great conference! It draws a great group of people, most of whom get to know one another over the weekend. The organizers do a great job of creating an intimate atmosphere with lots of interesting talks, demos, workshops, and way fun activities. I'd recommend it to anyone. I'd also love it if whoever has taken my kits would return them.
